Implementing a Vacation Management Module in PHP

In the ongoing development of the appweb_cs_2c_2024 project, we have been working on expanding our resource management capabilities. Specifically, this phase involved building out a dedicated controller to handle employee vacation requests and time-off tracking.

Why a Dedicated Vacation Controller?

As our application scales, centralizing logic related to leave requests becomes essential for maintaining clean architecture. Previously, vacation-related logic was scattered across generic controllers, leading to tight coupling and difficult maintenance. By isolating this functionality into its own controller, we ensure that concerns are separated and that the system remains modular.

Designing the Controller

When building a new controller for resource requests, it is important to follow the RESTful pattern to ensure predictable API behavior. Our new implementation focuses on handling requests, approvals, and status checks for employee time-off.

class VacationController extends Controller
{
    public function index(Request $request)
    {
        return Vacation::where('user_id', auth()->id())->get();
    }

    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $validated = $request->validate([
            'start_date' => 'required|date',
            'end_date' => 'required|date|after:start_date',
        ]);

        return Vacation::create($validated);
    }
}

This structure allows the application to cleanly manage the lifecycle of a vacation request, from initial submission to final processing, without cluttering existing user or payroll modules.

The Takeaway

When you find yourself adding specialized logic to an existing, crowded controller, treat it as a signal to extract that behavior into a dedicated class. By scoping your controllers to specific domains—like vacation management—you significantly reduce the cognitive load for other developers on your team.
